Lawn watering is essential for you to achieve and support a healthy lawn. However, there are many common lawn watering mistakes that people make. These mistakes range from not watering the grass enough to misusing the irrigation system.
Over Watering
Some people over water their yard. What they do not realize is that watering the yard too much, they are encouraging the grass to form a shallow root system which in turn can need to your grass getting damage from excessive heat. Grass that is over watered is more susceptible to drought damage and can become waterlogged.
Under Watering
On the other side of the spectrum are people who do not water their yard enough. Under watering a lawn can lead to many of the same problems that over-watering can lead too. Therefore it is important to water the correct amount.
Misusing Sprinklers
It seems like it would be common knowledge not to water your yard while it is raining or directly after rainfall, however, many people leave their sprinkler system running. After it rains a decent amount, your yard will not need watering for a couple of days. The precipitation from the rainfall should be enough. If you do water your yard after it has rained you risk the damage from over watering. Also, make sure that all of your sprinkler heads are working correctly. It is not uncommon for sprinkler heads to need some adjusting from year to year.
Lawn Watering at the Wrong Time
The best time to water your yard is in the early morning between 6-9 AM. If you water in the afternoon, you risk the water evaporating before it reaches the root system of your grass and plants. Watering in the evening is also a no-no because it can create conditions that are conducive to lawn fungus growing.
